Give Thanks Banner

Isn’t this time of giving thanks just one of the best times of the year?  I love the focus on truly being grateful the many blessings we have in life.  So when I was coming up with some craft ideas to decorate for Thanksgiving, I knew I wanted a banner with the simple message to “Give Thanks” for my holiday shelf.

I started with some left over scrap material in my stash.  We actually used this material to line a trunk we made that now serves as our coffee table and I thought it was perfect for this craft.  It is warm and cozy in color and in the light there are golden threads throughout that really shine.

I made a template with some card stock and traced it on the back side of the fabric to give me my squares.  I really wanted this banner to have lots of texture and feel homemade so when I cut out the squares I wasn’t super worried about having the lines all straight and exact.

I set the fabric squares aside and then cut some slightly smaller squares out of brown paper.

With squares complete I got brave and broke out my sewing machine.  I have never sewn paper onto fabric before but it totally worked and was really easy and fast.  And again I purposely didn’t worry about having straight lines.

With all my sewing done (whew!) I used my handy dandy Cricut to cut out some letters.  I added some simple embellishments to each square with some buttons, flowers, and little raffia bows.

To string all the letters together I used some twine and hot glue along the back.

Confession time: The first time I glued the letters onto the string I finished and turned it right side up all ready to “Oo” and “Ah” over my crafty skills.  Then I realized I had glued them in reverse order.   My banner read “Sknaht.”  Which would be great if I was celebrating Thanksgiving in Klingon.

The “Give” part was all made the same way except I printed the word out using my computer and printer instead of gluing the letters on from the Cricut.

  1. What a beautiful banner – would love to take time to make a banner this year!

  2. Cute, as always! I sewed paper to paper for wedding invites and loved it :-) It’s kind of like leather though, once a hole is in, it’s not coming out!

I love this! I don’t have a Cricut, so I am hoping I can make the letters all on the computer. Thank you for all the interesting ideas you post….it’s getting my “creativeness” back in gear!

Love this….beautiful. Loved your site too. I saw where you are adopting. I have twin boys that are 15 months old and we were married 23 years to the week when we brought them home from the hospital :):). Never give up hope.
