Bombarded with Balloons

My man had a birthday last month and turned 29!  One year closer to that big 3-0.    We actually headed to Six Flags the weekend before and proved to ourselves that we were still young and cool by riding roller coasters all day long.  We won’t dwell on the fact that we left at 7:30 exhausted.  I’m sure it means nothing.

So even though we had celebrated a few days before I still wanted to do something on his actual birthday.  I LOVE birthdays!  Actually I love any celebration and any reason to make an ordinary day special.  This was such a fun surprise and Sam totally loved it so I thought I’d share it with you guys as well.

The day before his birthday and after Sam left for work I went and picked up a bunch of balloons and a few goodies to attach to each balloon.  I wrote little notes to him and rolled them up, rolled up a few ones and fives, and picked up some gift cards to some of his favorite places.  Each little item got tied onto the end of the balloon and then I hid them all away in the guest bedroom.

Now let me tell you this next part required me to call on all my ninja skills.  I waited for Sam to fall asleep (it seemed like it took him hours longer than it normally does!) and then I snuck out of bed, into the guest room, and brought the balloons into our room a few at a time.  Now our house was built in the late 1800′s and the wooden floors are creaky!  Especially when I’m sneaking around the house at 2:00 a.m.  So I had to move so slowly but I eventually placed all the balloons around the bedroom.  Ninja approved.

When Sam woke up he was surrounded by balloons and totally surprised.  It was so fun!

There are lots of variations on this idea.  Balloons are pretty cheap so just using balloons would work great- you could get one balloon for every year.  You could write just notes on the end or just tie bills on the end.  It’s so fun no matter what you do!

Brie, Hi. Did the balloons really stay inflated all night? I loved your idea but stuck on the implementation issues. I’m affraid they would be all on the floor by the next morning.

      Hello Elena,
Thanks for your question! The answer is yes and no. The balloons did stay inflated and almost all of them were still floating in the morning. The three that had the gift cards had fallen from the weight of the gift cards and were hovering just above the floor. The balloon was still floating, but the gift card was near the floor. Does that make sense? As soon as the gift card was removed the balloon floated up to the ceiling again. I do know that most places offer hi-float (I think that is what it is called) and it is supposed to make the balloons last an extra 10 hours or so. I didn’t get it but it might be something to look into if you’re worried about the helium lasting long enough. All the other balloons with money or paper were still floating just fine. Hope this helps you out!
